Do not begin with a sentence alone

A search result may surface a handbook from an earlier year or a different department. The quoted rule can be accurate for that document and still be wrong for the student's situation.

Before interpreting the sentence, identify the document title, revision date, degree program, and section. A rule about doctoral candidacy should not be applied automatically to a taught master's program.

The table is an organizing method, not a declaration that every program uses the same offices or process. Its purpose is to keep each conclusion attached to its source.

When two documents appear inconsistent

Imagine one page gives a general deadline while a program document describes an earlier internal review. The dates may be sequential rather than contradictory. Alternatively, one page may be outdated. A written question that quotes both passages and identifies the student's program is easier to resolve than asking which page is “right” without context.

Until clarified, it is risky to treat the more convenient interpretation as an approved exception.

Preserve the answer with the requirement

If an office confirms which rule applies, keeping that response with the source helps avoid repeating the uncertainty later. An exception should be documented through the appropriate process; informal reassurance may not establish formal approval.

This independent guide was checked October 25, 2026. It offers a reading method rather than an official interpretation. The aim is to make uncertainty visible early enough that the responsible office can resolve it.
