Three fictional edits
| Overstated headline | More faithful headline | Why the edit matters |
|---|---|---|
| Late dinners cause poor sleep | Later dinners were linked to shorter sleep in a student survey | The survey found an association in a particular group. |
| New app fixes inactivity | Activity rose during a small app trial; long-term effects remain unclear | A measured change is narrower than a lasting solution. |
| Scientists prove coffee is safe | Study found no clear difference in one measured outcome | One result cannot establish safety across all outcomes. |
These examples are invented, rather than summaries of actual studies. Their purpose is to show where a headline can silently change the claim.
Find the verb doing too much work
“Prevents,” “causes,” “reverses,” and “proves” make strong commitments. Replacing every strong verb with “may” does not solve the problem: “Coffee may cure disease” can still suggest a finding the study never examined.
Sometimes the noun needs changing too. An improvement in a laboratory marker is not automatically an improvement in symptoms, daily function, or survival. Naming the actual outcome can make a headline more useful, even when it is less sweeping.
Keep the unanswered question visible
A headline has limited space. It cannot carry the full methods section. One practical approach is to retain the most consequential boundary in the headline and explain another in the description beneath it. A survey design might belong in the headline; follow-up length might fit in the description.
NCCIH's guidance on online health information emphasizes checking whether linked research supports the claim. That check can be performed in reverse when writing: locate the result first, then ask whether a reader seeing only the headline would infer something broader.
Clickability does not require suspense about the basic answer. A concrete question such as “Did sleep improve, or only the score?” gives readers a reason to continue while accurately signaling what the article will resolve.
