A posture change has its own purpose
Alternating positions may improve comfort or make a workday more varied. That can be a worthwhile reason to use a standing desk without claiming it replaces aerobic, strengthening, or balance activity.
Standing still also does not necessarily reach moderate aerobic intensity.
More wobble is not always a useful upgrade
Adding an unstable board while typing combines a work task with a balance demand. Whether that is suitable depends on the person and setup. It should not be assumed to improve everyday fall recovery simply because it feels less stable.
Divided attention and surrounding furniture can change the consequences of losing balance.
Separate the goals if that helps
| Goal | A more direct question |
|---|---|
| Vary work posture | Can the desk setup accommodate comfortable position changes? |
| Add movement | Are there opportunities for brief activity breaks? |
| Improve a balance skill | Is there an appropriately chosen and supported practice task? |
You do not need to make every seated activity into exercise. Work ergonomics and fitness can be addressed with complementary choices. If standing causes increasing discomfort or fatigue, more time upright is not automatically progress; the setup and duration may need adjustment.
